My Artistic Direction

At present my work is primarily in oil and focused on figurative male nude in bondage. I was simply focusing on the male erotic nude but I've drifted over to the body in restraints. The appeal is both emotional and technical. The type of restraint will alter the body in some way. That is a challenge and gives each painting a different problem to solve, whether it' how the rope pinches the flesh or how a blindfold distorts the face. Emotionally I become transfixed in the pathos of my subject. I am there and i am feeling the restraints along with the body I am painting. I added a twist to one of my painting by copying part of a Dega painting within my painting. It seemed amusing to me to include a reference to the great impressionist painter. It's not a famous painting and that makes the reference more subtle. I will included the painting in my next post.

Do you have an Exhibition Resume ....

If you are unfamiliar with my blog, you should look at some of the archive entries to get a feel for what this is all about. I've been renting this studio/gallery loft for 2 years. I've completed about 14 large canvases. During the first year the gallery area of the loft was open to the public. Lately, I decided to concentrate on my painting and not continue with exhibits except for the occasional "by invitation" exhibit. My next step is to find an established gallery large enough for an exhibit of my work. Basically, I need to begin marketing my work. I've retyped my exhibition resume, something all artists should have. The exhibition resume lists all of the shows where you've exhibited work. If the show was juried, you include the juror's name in the resume. It always helps to have a well-known artist jury the show. In addition the resume should list if the show was reviewed and if a catalog was published. Some artists have very long resumes. I read recently about an artist who had a 30 page resume! Must be nice to be able to do so much fine art work. My resume starts out in the 70s and centers on the 80s as the most productive period. Beginning in the 90s things drop off. But right now in the mid 2000s I'm producing a lot of work that I hope will lead to some hot shows. I need to add a second page to my resume. We will see what happens.

New paintings: Erotic male nudes

I've changed my direction somewhat with these new paintings. They are light hearted look at gay male eroticism. The paintings are almost life size, the canvas 44 x 50 inches. I've been working on them since the beginning of this year and have seven completed (except for some minor work still to do on them). I'm hoping that this series will be work that I can market. Oil painting is so very expensive. Click on February in the Archives to see some of the completed or nearly completed paintings.

Gallery news

Yes, the Wrenn Gallery hasn't had any exhibitions for a few months. Not to worry. I've been busy painting new works and revising a few others. The new canvases are 44" x 50" and feature male nudes. A few will be posted shortly.
